I told my mom our big news tonight. She came over to see her favorite grand-dog and while she was loving on Scout I offered her some chocolate. Here is how our conversation went:
Elizabeth: "Do you want some chocolate?"
Granny Roady: "YEAH! I want some chocolate! What kind is it?"
Elizabeth: "It's this new American/English hybrid." hands chocolate bar to Granny Roady
Granny Roady: reads label of chocolate "He or She; you'll have to wait and see. Does it have nuts in it?"
Elizabeth: "Did you read the label?"
Granny Roady: "Yes. Does that mean it has nuts in it?"
Elizabeth: "Maybe you should turn it over and read the back..."
Granny Roady: flips chocolate bar over and reads - The Mulleys are excited to announce the arrival of the newest member to the family in December. "Oh! You're pregnant!"
It was a little bit like pulling teeth to get her to understand what I was trying to say, but it does make for a great story! Granny Roady is excited to add another grand-baby to her brood of grandchildren.

Spilling the Beans
So I figured out how I'm going to tell my mom our big news. I wanted to make something crafty and cutesy so I decided on doing a remake on the Hershey bar by designing a new wrapper and then re-wrapping some chocolates to give to my mom and siblings. I told Dave about my idea and he got right on creating my vision. I wanted the bar to say "HEORSHE" instead of "HERSHEY'S". I also wanted the font to be the same as the font on the original Hershey's bar. It actually turned out really cute!
The next step was going to be to buy some Hershey's bars and re-wrap them. Did you realize that Hershey's bars are no longer wrapped in foil and then a paper wrapping? We were shocked to discover that they are now just wrapped in a plastic wrapper like most other candy bars. I guess it's more sanitary, but it sure did foil our plan (haha, get it?!). As it turns out, this change was made back in 2003-you can see how often we eat Hersheys' bars. So we bought some plastic wrapped candy bars and headed home to start experimenting. We unwrapped one bar to see if we could wrap it in foil before adding our new homemade wrapper. It worked and looked just like I had envisioned. So we completed a few more for my siblings and their families.
Next step...finding a time to tell my mom and my siblings. Dave plans on calling his parents since English chocolates are far superior to our American chocolates and they live so far away (I would have a heart attack waiting for them to receive their package).
The finished product:

First Trimester-CHECK!
We had our doctor's appointment this afternoon. It was actually supposed to be tomorrow but they called me last week to switch it up. This time I had to have my yearly pap smear and check-up as well as an ultrasound to check on the Lime. Everything looked great! The doctor showed us the baby and (s)he was moving all around and even rolled over at one point to moon us (looks like (s)he is a Roady afterall). We also got to hear the heartbeat for the first time today. It was amazing to hear that quick beating and realize that there really is someone growing inside of me. The heart rate was measured at 160 bpm. The doctor printed out two ultrasound pictures for us to take with us--but Dave and I were both disappointed that this doctor didn't attach the ultrasound pictures to decorative paper and then do hand drawings of the ultrasound pictures. So we just have two lonely ultrasound pictures to share this time.
Since we are out of the first trimester, we are at the point where we can start telling people about our good news. We are trying to think of some creative ways to tell people and will soon make this blog public so that our loved ones can follow us on this pretty awesome adventure. Stay tuned for the unveiling of our secret!
Our next appointment is June 29.

A Fun Game of "Have You Ever"
I went to my appointment this morning with the OB Coordinator. It was basically a big game of "Have You Ever". She would ask a question like, "Have you or anyone in your family ever delivered a baby premature outside in the Congo?" to which I would respond, "No". This went on for a while until she finally realized that Dave and I both come from relatively healthy families and we have no serious illnesses in our histories. She gave me some paperwork to sign, explained the various tests that we can opt in or out of and explained the billing information that will be mailed to the house in about a week. When I was done talking to the OB Coordinator, I went across the hall and had 8 vials of blood drawn to test for everything from HIV to pregnancy. Once I was done with the vampire I was free to go.
Our next appointment is May 26 for a regular OB visit.

It's an Astronaut!
So we went in for our follow-up appointment this afternoon to see how everything was progressing. There was a lot of waiting-probably since our appointment was for late in the day and there are always people that need to be seen for emergencies. We waited patiently until we were called back to the ultrasound room. We went back there and "assumed the position" and waited for the doctor to come in and work his magic. When Dr. G came in he performed another ultrasound and was quickly able to see Olive. He found a very strong heartbeat and said that everything looked good. He said Olive was upside down like an astronaut. He printed out several pictures and told us to come to his office once I was dressed. We walked down to his office and he was busy attaching the ultrasound pictures to decorative paper and drawing his pictures to describe the Olive's positioning (since you really can't tell anything in those black and white pictures). While he was drawing his very realistic pictures (Dave is going to very disappointed if the Olive comes out and doesn't have that big goofy smile on it's face), I told him about my situation at work with the difficult student and he was not happy about it. He said that I shouldn't be dealing with any aggressive students and he wrote me a note to that affect.
When we got home, I emailed my supervisor and told her that I had a doctor's note saying that I could not handle or work with aggressive or confrontational students. She wasn't pleased, but said she would try and work something out.

I scheduled my next two appointments-one with the OB Coordinator (to go over medical history and set up billing) on May 6 and my next regular OB visit on May 26. I'll keep you updated on the progress.
